The Sybil Verch Child Care Centre

The YMCA-YWCA of Vancouver Island gratefully recognizes the generous donation by Sybil Verch with the naming of the Child Care Centre at the Westhills Y.

“As an advocate for empowering women to take control of their finances, I recognize this begins at home.  Parents need safe and reliable child care options in order to pursue career opportunities and provide the essentials for their families.  Safe, quality child care helps children learn and develop new life skills and provides parents with the piece of mind and flexibility needed to build solid financial security for their families.”  – Sybil Verch

The Westhills YMCA-YWCA is located in Langford, BC, the fastest growing city in British Columbia. Supported by a private donation by Sybil Verch, the Sybil Verch Child Care Centre at Westhills offers 36 licensed spaces for children 18 months to 5 years.

Licensed Spaces: 12 Toddler spaces (18 months-36 months) and 24 spaces for children 3-5 years (36 months-5 years).

Our Staff

YMCA-YWCA Child Care staff are licensed through the BC Early Childhood Registry, have completed a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Clearance and are certified in First Aid. Staff maintain the child/staff ratios established by Community Care Facilities Licensing (CCFL). At a minimum:

  • 1 caregiver for every 4 children aged 18-35 months
  • 1 caregiver for every 8 children aged 3-5 years

Hours of Operation

Monday-Friday 7:45am-5:15pm

Our programs are open year round with the exception of Statutory Holiday closures and one week at Christmas. This week–long closure provides the opportunity to complete yearly maintenance work in the programs.

Starting the Program

To make the transition into the child care program easier for children, YMCA-YWCA of Vancouver Island Child Care follows a gradual entry process. This gradual orientation over the first week of the program allows time for your child to feel comfortable, to start developing friendships and to become familiar with the staff.

Transitioning to the Next Program

Children currently enrolled are placed on our internal waitlist; enrollment does not guarantee space in the next program. Any vacant space will be filled in the following priority:

  1. Children who are currently enrolled in a YMCA-YWCA of Vancouver Island Child Care program (at any location)  and who are ready (meet age requirements) will move to the next age group.
  2. Applicants on the waitlist who are siblings of children enrolled at the centre.
  3. External applicants on the waitlist will be called.

However, if there are no vacancies in the next age group, we cannot guarantee that your child can stay at the centre (i.e. if a child turns 36 months in January and there are no vacancies in the next age group until July). We will apply for a retention request to keep your child in the program, but as this decision is made by Community Care Facilities Licensing (CCFL) we cannot guarantee the retention will be granted. If the request is unsuccessful, we will contact our other facilities to see if space is available.

To leave the program you must notify the YMCA-YWCA of Vancouver Island Child Care two (2) months in advance. Withdrawals are effective on the 1st of the month and must be submitted in writing to the Centre Supervisor.  For example, to withdraw for August 31st, notice must be provided on or by June 30th.
