YMCA-YWCA Child Care
The YMCA-YWCA has been providing child care in Victoria for over 45 years and is a provider of quality child care. Our programs provide safe, healthy, creative places where children can play in small groups, develop rewarding relationships, learn new skills and have a lot of FUN! YMCA-YWCA Child Care provides opportunities where children develop values, self-confidence and social skills – essential components to building strong citizens and healthy communities.
YMCA-YWCA Child Care is a resource that parents can rely on to provide an environment outside of the home that is safe, caring and developmentally supportive for their child. YMCA-YWCA Child Care is a place where children can grow and reach their potential. Our child care programs offer enriched programming to engage children in a variety of experiences.
YMCA Playing to Learn
All YMCA-YWCA Child Care programs follow YMCA Playing to Learn curriculum. YMCA Playing to Learn helps children discover learning through creative play and aligns with primary school benchmarks. YMCA Playing to Learn is intended to ensure a child’s continued enthusiasm and capacity for lifelong learning. It provides an understanding of how play offers the foundation for learning to read and write, and for learning mathematics, science and technology. It provides early childhood educators with the skills to prepare spaces more conducive to learning and best practices to encourage quality learning experiences.
- Family Information Handbook
The Early Child Care Program Family Handbook is a valuable resource for families and contains our polices, practices and much more! We encourage you to review this handbook to assist you in deciding if Y Child Care is the right fit for your family.
- Our Staff
YMCA-YWCA Child Care staff are licensed through the BC Early Childhood Registry, have completed a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Clearance and are certified in First Aid. Staff are trained YMCA Playing to Learn educators and participate in on-going professional development to stay current within their field.
Staff maintain the child/staff ratios established by Community Care Facilities Licensing (CCFL). At a minimum:
- 1 caregiver for every 4 children aged 10-18 months
- 1 caregiver for every 4 children aged 18-35 months
- 1 caregiver for every 8 children aged 3-5 years
- Hours of Operation
We ask that parents notify staff of their preferred hours when registering. While these extended hours are meant to support busy families, we ask that parents maintain a 9-hour child care day to encourage strong family relationships and home/child care life balance.
Our programs are open year round with the exception of Statutory Holiday closures and one week at Christmas. This week–long closure provides the opportunity to complete yearly maintenance work in the programs.
Child Care fees include all program costs; including enriched program activities, and a nutritious morning and afternoon snack. The YMCA-YWCA of Vancouver Island reviews its fees on an annual basis. The Eagle Creek YMCA –YWCA Child Care participates in the BC Child Care Fee Reduction Program. The fee reduction is automatically deducted from monthly fees.

The first step to registering for Y Child Care is to be added to our waitlist. Please note: being added to our waitlist is not a confirmation of registration.
- Offer Of Space
If we have contacted you with an offer of space and we do not hear from you, we will assume you no longer require child care and will remove your child from our waitlist.
If a space becomes available, the first step is to arrange a child care centre tour. Please contact the Child Care Supervisor to arrange a time to meet and tour the centre. This visit provides you and your child the opportunity to explore the centre, meet the staff, and ensures our program is a good fit for your family and the YMCA-YWCA of Vancouver Island. Your child must attend the tour.
Within 48 hours of your visit to the centre the Child Care Supervisor will contact you to discuss the next steps to registration. If a space is offered, a deposit of $200 is required to hold the space. This deposit is applied to the last month child care fees.
Short Notice Spaces:
Short notice spaces become available at the last minute for a variety of reasons. Notification to fill these spaces is done through email to all families with children who meet the criteria to fill the space. The registration process remains the same as above.
Transition spaces become available as children move to the next program within the child care centre or leave the program to attend kindergarten. Notification to fill these spaces is done by a phone call to current family members first, then past families and finally to our waitlist. The registration process remains the same as above.

- Gradual Entry
To make the transition into the child care program easier for children, YMCA-YWCA of Vancouver Island Child Care follows a gradual entry process. This gradual orientation over the first week of the program allows time for your child to feel comfortable, to start developing friendships and to become familiar with the staff.
- Transitioning to the Next Program
Children currently enrolled are placed on our internal waitlist; enrollment does not guarantee space in the next program. Any vacant space will be filled in the following priority:
- Children who are currently enrolled in a YMCA-YWCA of Vancouver Island Child Care program (at any location) and who are ready (meet age requirements) will move to the next age group.
- Applicants on the waitlist who are siblings of children enrolled at the centre.
- External applicants on the waitlist will be called.
However, if there are no vacancies in the next age group, we cannot guarantee that your child can stay at the centre (i.e. if a child turns 36 months in January and there are no vacancies in the next age group until July). We will apply for a retention request to keep your child in the program, but as this decision is made by Community Care Facilities Licensing (CCFL) we cannot guarantee the retention will be granted. If the request is unsuccessful, we will contact our other facilities to see if space is available.
To withdraw from a child care program, the YMCA-YWCA of Vancouver Island Child Care requires 2 months written notice. Withdrawals are effective on the 1st of the month and must be submitted in writing to the Centre Supervisor. For example, to withdraw for August 31st, notice must be provided on or by June 30th.
For registration inquiries please contact Registration Services; a representative will be happy to assist you.
